History:

  • Demand for a German School began in the U.S. as early as the late 19th century
  • Association of interested German expatriates founded the German Forum (1978) with the goal to establish a German school
  • German Educational Association founded (1979)
  • Dedication ceremony led by Vice-Chancellor and Minister of  Foreign Affairs, Hans Dietrich Genscher (Sept. 23, 1980)

Development:

  • Purchased building in White Plains (1982)
  • First graduation High School class (May 15, 1989)
  • Construction of the school gym (1997-2001)
  • Introduction of 12-year curriculum (instead of 13-year curriculum)
  • New program for five year olds (2002)
  • Certificate of Excellence awarded by the German authorities  (Aug. 3, 2009)

Statistics:

  • 64 Students in grades 1-5 in 1980
  • 320 students in grades ES1 – 12 by our 25th anniversary (2005)
  • current enrollment 365 students (January 2010)
