German School New York is an independent bilingual (German/English) school which teaches classes according to German as well as American standards and curricula

The students at GSNY are, for the most part, citizens of German-speaking countries who may have lived in several foreign countries before. Such experience together with their entrance into the cultural and academic life of the U.S. enhance their innate qualities of flexibility and creativity and give them a deeply tolerant perspective of the multilingual "international citizen".

Admission is open to students regardless of race, creed, color, national or ethnic origin. Since our primary language is German, we encourage students to begin in grade K if they have only little knowledge of German. Some basic knowledge of German is required, though.

German School New York is accredited by the Permanent Conference of Department of Education of the Federal Republic of Germany, a member of the New York State Association of Independent Schools (NYSAIS); and a New York non-public Elementary and Seconary School.

Our elementary school includes grade K (for five year olds) through grade 4 and our secondary school includes grade 5 through 12.

We offer two exit exams, the German "Abitur" (which requires a university preparatory curriculum) and the New York State High School Diploma, both at the end of grade 12. The degree program leading to the "Abitur" at GSNY conforms to the advanced and rigorous requirements in all the following subjects for all students:

  • German language and literature
  • English language and literature
  • French, Latin and Spanish language and literature
  • Mathematics
  • Biology, Chemistry, Physics
  • Geography, World History, American History and Social Studies
  • Music and/or Art
  • Physical Eduacation

School History

German School New York opened its doors on September, 8th, 1980, starting with 68 children in grades 1 through 5. During the opening ceremony former Secretary of State Hans Dietrich Genscher said, it was the prime task of this school to provide a good education for German speaking children, which would enable them to return back to their countries without any problems. He also mentioned that the school should do all to integrate its members into the American society and into our local environment, so that this new school could function as a bridge between nations and cultures and a meeting place for Germans as well as Americans and individuals from other nations.
